Making Time Count: Pointing Your Children to Jesus

Time is one of life’s most precious and limited resources. Every one of us has the same 24 hours in a day—no more, no less. No matter how organized or spontaneous we are, we cannot add a single second to it. We can choose how to steward this gift of time with our children wisely.

Some of us are planners. We live by our lists, checking off tasks and maximizing every minute. Others embrace a go-with-the-flow approach, savoring the flexibility of each day. Regardless of how one manages time, we all face the challenge of using it well. When it comes to parenting, we are all trying to figure it out. Every child and situation brings different variables to the equation.

The world is filled with competing voices, but your voice and influence are some of the most powerful tools God has given you to shape your children’s faith. By intentionally modeling Christlike love, teaching them biblical truths, and prioritizing prayer, you are planting seeds that can grow into a lifelong relationship with Jesus.

Even when it feels like the effort isn’t making a difference, remember this: God works in ways we cannot always see. Your faithfulness in pointing your children to Jesus, no matter how small or simple it may seem, will have a lasting impact.

The Teacher in Ecclesiastes wrestled with this very reality, lamenting the fleeting nature of life “under the sun.” In parenting, the passage of time can feel like a relentless cycle of busyness and exhaustion. But when we choose to focus on what matters most—pointing our children to Jesus—we invest our time in ways that have eternal value. Even if it’s hard and inconvenient at times.

It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present. The little things you do daily, like sharing a Bible verse, praying over them, or simply listening to their hearts, show them who Jesus is. Your faithfulness, even on the hard days, reflects God’s love in ways they’ll never forget.

As you think about how you spend your time, take heart. You don’t have to fill every moment with big, extravagant gestures. It’s the small, consistent steps—pointing them to God’s love, truth, and grace—that leave the most lasting impact. The seeds you’re planting now may take time to grow, but God is faithful to water them, so, be encouraged!

Time may be fleeting, but the investment you make in your children’s faith will echo into eternity. We all must look through the fog and noise of this world to see what God is doing. You’re doing holy work, and it matters. Keep making the moments count with your children.

"I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man." Ecclesiastes 3:12-13
