Hope Fulfilled: Pointing the Next Generation to Jesus at Christmas

Christmas has a way of stirring longing in our hearts. Kids feel it too—the countdowns, the waiting, the excitement of what’s to come. That’s why the hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel resonates so deeply. It’s more than a carol; it’s a prayer, a cry of hope that points us to Jesus.

As children’s ministry leaders and parents, we have the joy of teaching kids. We tell them that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s greatest promise. He came to be with us.

Connecting Kids to Generations of Worshipers

This hymn stretches back centuries. This hymn was originally a Latin chant sung during Advent in the 9th century. John Mason Neale translated it into English in 1851. For hundreds of years, believers have sung this same prayer: “O come, O come, Emmanuel.”

Sharing this history with kids connects them to a bigger story. They’re not just singing words. They’re joining voices with believers from across time. These believers longed for the Messiah and celebrated His arrival.

Scripture: The Promise Fulfilled

Isaiah 7:14 prophesied, “The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.” Centuries later, Matthew 1:18–23 shows the prophecy fulfilled. Joseph hears the angel announce that Mary will bear a son. This son is Jesus, God with us.

What seemed impossible became reality: God stepped into our world. He didn’t stay far away. He came near. For kids who sometimes feel small, alone, or unnoticed, that truth changes everything.

The Empty Chair

Place an empty chair at the front of the room or in your home. Ask the kids: “What do you feel when you see this empty seat? Maybe you think of someone missing, or waiting for a friend.” Then explain: “God’s people were waiting for someone too. They longed for Emmanuel—God with us. When Jesus came, the chair wasn’t empty anymore. God came to be with us.”

This simple visual sticks. It shows kids that hope is fulfilled in Jesus.

Bringing It Home

Ask your kids:

  • What does Emmanuel mean? (God with us)
  • How did God’s people show hope as they waited?
  • How can we show hope in Jesus today?

Then remind them: Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to be with us. Hope has come!

Encouragement for Leaders and Parents

This Christmas, let’s help kids know that hope isn’t found in presents under the tree. Instead, it is found in a Savior who came to be with them. Emmanuel is here.
