Three Ways Jesus Shows Us Who He Is

As children’s ministry leaders and parents, we’re constantly looking for ways to help kids see that Jesus is not just a character in the Bible—He’s the living, powerful Savior who meets real needs. The story in Luke 8:45–56 gives us a front-row seat to Jesus’ compassion and power as He heals sickness and brings a little girl back to life.

When we teach this passage to children, we’re not just telling a dramatic story—we’re pointing them to the only One who can rescue them from both physical brokenness and spiritual death.

Desperate Faith

Imagine the crowd pressing in around Jesus. People everywhere, noise all around, needs piling up.

Out of that crowd comes Jairus, a synagogue leader whose daughter is dying. Desperation drove him to Jesus.

And then, quietly, there’s a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years—an outcast, sick and hopeless. She believed that just touching Jesus’ robe would bring healing. That tiny act of faith led to an immediate miracle. Jesus stops everything to affirm her:

“Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace. You are healed.” (Luke 8:48)

While that conversation happens, Jairus receives devastating news:

“Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.”

But Jesus wasn’t finished.

He looks at Jairus and says,

“Don’t be afraid. Just believe.” (Luke 8:50)

Jesus Has Power Over Sickness AND Death

Jesus arrives at Jairus’ house and finds people already mourning. He clears the room, takes the little girl’s hand, and speaks simple words with eternal power:

“Little girl, get up.” (Luke 8:54)

She rises. She walks. Everyone is amazed.

In this one story, Jesus heals a woman the doctors had given up on and raises a child no one could save. Jesus healed sickness. Jesus conquered death.

How This Helps Kids See Who Jesus Really Is

In children’s ministry, we’re always answering one big question: “Who is Jesus?”

This story helps us say with clarity:

  • Jesus is compassionate. He stops for the woman no one sees.
  • Jesus is powerful. He heals with a word and raises the dead with a touch.
  • Jesus is trustworthy. When hope seems gone, He says, “Just believe.”

When kids hear this, we want them to understand something crucial: Jesus didn’t just come to do cool miracles—He came to reveal who He is. Every healing, every miracle points to His identity as the Messiah, the Son of God.

Jesus Does What No One Else Can Do

This story is also a picture of the gospel.

We’re all like the little girl—physically alive but spiritually dead in sin. We need Jesus to say, “Get up.”

We’re like the bleeding woman—hurting, unclean, and helpless. We need to reach out in faith, believing Jesus can heal what no one else can.

And we’re like Jairus—desperate for someone to step in and rescue. We need to hear Jesus say, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”

Helping Kids Respond in Faith

Help kids respond to this story by reminding them:

  • Faith means trusting Jesus even when we’re scared or sad.
  • Jesus is a Waymaker. When everything seems hopeless, He can make a way.
  • Jesus brings us into God’s Forever Family. When we trust Him, He forgives our sin and gives us new life.

These are not just ideas for kids. They’re deep truths for all of us.

How to Apply This at Home or in Ministry

Here are a few ways you can reinforce this story with the kids in your care:

  • Object Lesson: Use a bandage or medical kit to talk about how doctors can help—but Jesus can do what even doctors can’t.
  • Prayer Time: Ask kids what’s hurting in their lives or the lives of others. Pray together, asking Jesus to bring healing and hope.
  • Memory Verse Idea: Luke 8:50 – “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.” Have them say it when they’re worried or afraid.

Jesus healed sickness. Jesus conquered death.
Let’s help our kids trust Him with everything.

Reflection Questions for Leaders and Parents:

  1. Where in your own life do you need to hear Jesus say, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe”?
  2. Are you helping your kids learn that Jesus is powerful enough to heal both body and soul?
  3. How can your home or ministry become a place where faith in Jesus is encouraged and celebrated?

Let’s keep pointing the next generation to the One who still heals, still saves, and still calls us to rise.
